The Sickle Cell Disease Association of America-Uriel Owens Chapter, is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization chartered by the State of Kansas. It was established to:

1. Provide various services to persons with sickle cell disease.

2. Provide assistance to families of sickle cell disease patients.

3. Provide general information to the community about sickle cell disease.

The late Uriel Owens, who was a victim of sickle cell anemia, had long expressed the view that sickle cell disease patients and their families should have some type of organization to assist them in various ways.

After the death of Owens on October 16, 1980, family members and close friends decided to establish such an organization.

This organization would serve as a memorial to Owens, who contributed greatly to the community, and it would also serve the needs of persons with sickle cell disease.

Thus the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America - Uriel Owens Chapter was founded on January 19, 1981.

Sources of revenue include contributions from the community at large, the Combined Federal Campaign, civic and charitable organizations and fund raisers. We are not a United Way agency nor do we receive grants from any government entity.

We are a charter member of Community Health Charities of Kansas and Missouri and receive funds from that source.
